For thousands of years, San hunter-gatherers, the indigenous inhabitants of southern Africa, lived in these mountains and skilfully painted the walls of the caves and rock overhangs that were their shelters, with a wealth of paintings that shed light on both the day-to-day and spiritual rituals of their ancient lives.

The enormous Drakensberg mountain range can be divided into four regions with it gateways, Bergville as the gateway to the mountains Northern Region, Winterton located at the foothills of the Central area, Himeville located in the Underberg are beneath the mountain's Southern region and East Griqualand and Umzimkhulu.
