Originally Portuguese explorers called Benguerra Island “Santa Antonio”. Only later was a tribal chief honoured, when the island was named after him. The island is very small - roughly 11km long and 5,5km across. It lies14km from Vilanculos, a town on the mainland of Mozambique.

It is impossible to distance yourself from the rhythms of Africa at Marlin Lodge. The place is seeped in history –tales of the tall masted carracks used by the Portuguese to transport slaves and ivory to the East, legends of the Queen of Sheba's and her Ophir pearls...
