Benguerra in Mozambique
Benguerra Island Vacations & Travel Information:
The Bazaruto Archipelago lies in the Indian Ocean within Mozambique’s National Marine Park. There are several islands, the main ones being Margaruque, Benguerra and Bazaruto. Marlin Lodge is situated on Benguerra, the second largest island. The waters around this island appear almost translucent, and are usually dotted with numerous dhow sails and the variety of marine life is mind-boggling. It is a piece of untarnished paradise for those who love tranquillity and extreme natural beauty.

Originally Portuguese explorers called Benguerra Island “Santa Antonio”. Only later was a tribal chief honoured, when the island was named after him. The island is very small - roughly 11km long and 5,5km across. It lies14km from Vilanculos, a town on the mainland of Mozambique.
It is impossible to distance yourself from the rhythms of Africa at Marlin Lodge. The place is seeped in history –tales of the tall masted carracks used by the Portuguese to transport slaves and ivory to the East, legends of the Queen of Sheba's and her Ophir pearls...
Travellers feel themselves slipping back into the past as the Archipelago's fishermen in their graceful dhows pole their way through the crystal clear waters around Benguerra Island looking for favourable winds to help them along their way. Travellers many centuries back were able to look on this exact same sight. The lifestyle of the native inhabitants of the island is relaxed and slow moving. In the dark of night, the sound of drums travels across the warm air, lending a real taste of Africa to the scene...(Self-drives – If you wish, self-drive trips can be arranged.)
