Day 2 Khalahari Gateway to Ghanzi
After breakfast we venture deeper into the Central Kalahari and our camp in the Ghanzi district, here we will spend time getting to know the fascinating San people. This afternoon we will join our San guides for a guided walk that will introduce us to the many secrets of their survival in the Kalahari Desert. The nomadic San are hunter-gatherers that have passed down a rich knowledge of the plants and animals that play such an important part in their lifestyle. This evening we will get a first-hand experience of the San culture, well known for its rich traditions of song, dance and story-telling.
Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Included Highlight: San Evening Dance Performance
Optional Activity: San Guided Walk (late afternoon or following morning)

Day 3 Khwai Conservation Area
You will be separated from your truck for the next 2 nights and it is therefore important that you pack/gather your personal belongings which you may need, before we depart for Maun today as there is limited time in Maun for re-packing and storing.  Please pack lightly and only take what you need for the following two nights.  This morning we rise early and make our way towards Maun, where upon arrival in Maun you will have the opportunity to go on an optional scenic flight over the Delta (time and weather permitting). After your optional flight, you will be collected from Maun and will be transferred to the Khwai Conservation area in smaller safari type vehicles.  This evening our guide will prepare us on what to expect for our mokoro excursion into the Okavango Delta and our game drive in Khwai.
Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Optional Activity: Okavango Delta scenic flight

Day 4 Khwai Conservation Area
Heading out early, we transfer by safari vehicle to the poling station, where we will meet the polers who will be escorting us into the Delta. The polers will steer us through the serene area of narrow, reed lined channels which open out onto beautiful lagoons. Reaching one of the many islands, a nature walk may be taken with your pole and after the walk, we return by mokoro through the channels back to the poling station. While the mokoro trail is not primarily a game viewing activity, a variety of game may be spotted in this pristine wilderness area, including elephant, giraffe, kudu, impala and zebra. After lunch, we will return to Moremi Game Reserve for our afternoon game drive which will be conducted in open 4x4 safari vehicles. The game viewing routes chosen during the afternoon by the professional guide may vary especially when high floods are experienced as certain roads may be closed or impassable.
Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Included Highlight: Okavango Delta Morning Mokoro Excursion / Khwai Conservation Afternoon Game Drive

Day 5 Khwai – Savuti – Chobe - Kasane
Today’s journey from Khwai to Kasane (via the Savuti National Park) is expected to take approximately 10 hours.  You will pack up camp and depart at first light on the open 4x4 safari vehicles.  The road conditions can best be described as dense sand and depending on the season you are travelling in, could be through thick vegetation.  During the winter months (May-September) we strongly suggest layering up on clothing, pack a beanie and/or scarf and thick jacket.  Animal sightings can never be guaranteed while we transit/traverse these wilderness areas and any stops for viewing of the wildlife will add to the time spent in the 4x4 safari vehicle.  We suggest stocking up on snacks and at least 1 x 5l bottle of water in Maun for the journey as there are no re-supply points until you reach Kasane.

The Savuti Game Reserve is a unique area bordered by the Okavango Delta to west and Chobe National Park to the east.  Today is a long day as we spend most of our day travelling via the various sectors including the Savuti Game Reserve in search of the species that roam the plains.  Expect some bumpy roads as we traverse this wilderness area in our 4x4 vehicles.  Offering habitats from wetland, open water to the grasslands and Savannah woodland, we hope to see as many species of fauna and flora possible.  This afternoon we arrive on the banks of the Chobe River and will be re-united with our truck in the town of Kasane.
Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Included Highlight: Full Day Game Drive through Savuti Game Reserve in 4x4 safari vehicles

Day 6 Chobe National Park
For those that opt to participate in the optional game drive in Chobe National Park, you will be collected early from camp and will venture out in open 4x4 safari type vehicles.  You will return to camp in time for lunch and a quick siesta before we head out in the afternoon to explore the Chobe National Park from the river, enjoying a leisurely boat cruise which allows us an up close and personal experience with the many elephants that frequent the river in the afternoons.
Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Included Highlight: Chobe National Park Boat Cruise

Optional Activity: Chobe National Park Game Drive

Day 7 Zimbabwe -Victoria Falls
With the memories of our wildlife encounters firmly etched in our minds, we cross the border into Zimbabwe this morning and travel the short distance to Victoria Falls. Today you have the opportunity to visit the spectacular Victoria Falls at your leisure, also known by the local name of “Mosi-oa Tunya” (the smoke that thunders). While much of today is dedicated to viewing the mighty Zambezi River as it drops into the Batoka Gorge below, the bustling adventure town of Victoria Falls also offers a range of optional activities for those wanting a dose of adrenaline in the afternoon. For the more relaxed traveller there are craft markets and coffee shops on offer as well.
Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Child Policy on Tour on Overland Tours
We do accept children on our tours
The following age policies will apply:
8 Years: No children under 8 years of age
8 –9 Years: Children between the ages of 8 –9 years will be accepted to travel on a request basis only.
10 –15 Years: Tours will accept a maximum of four children between the ages of 10 to 15 years on any tour without requesting permission from clients. If more children want to join a tour once the maximum has been reached, this will be allowed on a request basis.
17 –18 Years: Guests of this age may travel with us with a letter of permission from their guardian; they do not require a parent to travel with them.
Any traveler between the ages of 8 –16 must be accompanied by a parent, unless specific authorization had been obtained from Getaway Africa.
Due to our alcohol laws in South Africa –No children under the age of 18 are permitted to partake in activities involving wine tasting.
Age restrictions may apply to certain items listed in the respective tour activities. It is important that you are aware of these restrictions prior to confirming children on tour.

Travelers over 65 yrs of age
65+ Years: Guests 65 and older will be required to complete a medical questionnaire and return to us before we will be able to confirm their participation in the tour.

Accommodation on tour
We have done all that we can to keep our fantastic low prices on these tours so the accommodation is not luxury but you can expect 2 –3 star twin / double accommodation and the majority of it is en-suite. In some places, we also make use of permanent safari tents which are considered "accommodation". We have selected accommodation that is in line with the areas we visit so there is a good variety. It is important to note that general accommodation standards are higher in Southern Africa than they are in East Africa. Please bring along your own towel as these are not always provided.

Single Travelers
If you are interested to share a room with the same-sex guest, we will charge you the single supplement upfront and if successful in pairing you up, will refund your single supplement upon completion of the tour.

Medical Insurance
Medical insurance is compulsory and you will be asked for your policy number before embarking on tour. Please make sure that your travel and medical insurance covers cancellation as well as being airlifted in case of a serious illness or injury as our tours often travel a long way from good hospital facilities. If credit card insurance is taken out, this often does not provide sufficient cover therefore a separate travel insurance policy is recommended

Pre/Post tour Accommodation and Transfers, and Onward Travel
We are more than happy to assist with booking accommodation and transfers for you before and after your tour. The properties that we use are generally at the tour departure point and we offer this service to make life easier for you. We offer a good value for money transit from Vic-Falls to Johannesburg which you can add to your tour.

Do not book your onward travel or flights on the day your tour is scheduled to end (unless the last day of tour does not involve any traveling and ends after breakfast). We could be running late for a number of reasons. This also puts a lot of unnecessary pressure on your fellow travelers and guides and turns the last day of tour into a rush. Getaway Africa will not be held accountable if you have booked flights out on the last day of tour and you are not able to get to the airport on time.

Visas - very important!
As visa requirements vary considerably depending on your nationality, please contact the various embassies or visa service agencies to re-check visa requirements at least four weeks prior to departing for your tour. Please note that visas are the responsibility of the traveler and that Getaway Africa will not be held responsible for clients being denied entry should they not be in the possession of the relevant visas.

Should the adventure tour you are joining be re-entering a country, be sure to have a multiple entry visa that enables you to re-enter the country.

Arranging VISAS is not our specialty and due to this we do not always have the most updated information as these regulations change regularly. We suggest that you contact Relocation Online who will be able to provide accurate information or alternatively check with the local embassy. www.relocation-online.com

Traveling in our purpose built Overland Trucks
The transportation on tour is a major component of all our tours. These tours are road trips and incorporate long drives, bumpy roads and possible mechanical problems, also, digging your truck out of mud is sometimes a considered a highlight.

We have the newest and most modern fleet around. While there are similarities between our vehicles, our camping/accommodated trucks have 24 seats and additional packing space for camping equipment. Ideal for small or large groups, we also have a club area, ideal for playing cards or socializing. Our camping and accommodated tours are not city to city coach liner trip and there is no air-conditioning or toilets on these trucks

Participation and Interaction, what's expected of you
Although we do most of the work, the nature of these tours is not that of a beach holiday. A little assistance from the group can make a real difference as it means that the guides have more time for you and more time to make the tour amazing so getting involved definitely enhances the tour experience. This is an adventure, not a holiday.

All camping & accommodated overland tours are limited participation tours and what we would like your assistance with is:

  • Assist with washing up duties
  • Offer your help with the food preparation if time is pressing
  • Loading and unloading the truck
  • Loading and unloading your own bag
  • Help keeping the truck and cooler box clean (it is your home after all for the next days and weeks)
  • Help setting up camp
  • Putting up and taking down your tent. The first time is a challenge, thereafter it’s a breeze!

Your tent and camping equipment and kitchen utensils are provided on your tour so please take care of our equipment, as anything broken or lost on tour cannot be easily replaced. Our guides do all the cooking, however you are welcome to ask the guides if you are keen to share your culinary skills with the group.
