The Rhino and Lion park, situated in the Cradle of Mankind, is an exquisite privately owned nature reserve that forms part of South Africa’s top five attractions to visit. The visitor can experience a pretty good variety of wildlife, while still remaining close to Johannesburg. This is ideal for travelers who do not have much time in the country, but want to have an “African Game Experience”. More than 20 species of game inhabit the park and a drive through this reserve makes for exciting viewing trying to spot them all.
Meet Thandile, arguably Gauteng's most special lion. She was spotted as a cup in July 1999 by a visitor to the Rhino & Lion Nature Reserve, and is one of only about 40 true white lions known to exist. The cub had been abandoned by its mother at the time and the visitor alerted the game rangers, who brought the 750g ball of fur to rescue, where she was subsequently hand-reared. She's not an Albino but a true white lion, since Albinos are white but they have pink eyes and are generally sterile. Thandile's eyes are blue and her colouring is the result of a recessive gene found in some animal species.
The reserve spans across 3000ha and you can find Lion, Cheetah and Wild Dogs among the many species of antelope at the reserve. Look out for the Bird of Prey Centre and the “Lost and Found” Sanctuary.
