Zanzibar Covid-19 Protocols

The year 2020 will go down in history as the year where the world came to a halt due to the Covid 2019 pandemic. However, for those seeking to escape the chaos of soaring coronavirus cases in major cities, we have collected the Zanzibar Covid-19 Protocols and restrictions.

The Coronavirus pandemic has affected the travel industry greatly and international travel has slowed down considerably with many resorts and hotels in Zanzibar experiencing extremely low occupancies. Some hotels and Resorts in Zanzibar have temporarily closed down, while some may close indefinitely. It is important for travellers to check with their travel agent to see which hotels and resorts remain open before booking.

Flights from South Africa to Zanzibar during the 2019 Coronavirus Pandemic
The best option to fly to the island of Zanzibar from South Africa is with Mango airlines with their direct scheduled flight. This flight schedule has however been reduced to flying only twice weekly on Tuesdays and Saturdays. This schedules might be reduced further depending on demand.

Zanzibar Covid-19 Travel Restrictions during Coronavirus Pandemic

Is Zanzibar open for tourism during Covid-19?
Yes. International travellers are allowed to travel for tourism purposes to the island of Zanzibar (as well as Tanzania)

Health Screening & Zanzibar Covid-19 Protocols on arrival
All travellers whether foreigners or returning residents entering or leaving the United Republic of Tanzania will be subjected to enhanced screening for COVID19 infection.

Is quarantine required on arrival in Zanzibar?
There is no mandatory quarantine for arrivals in Zanzibar.

Covid-19 Tests prior to departure to Zanzibar
South African travellers do not require a Covid-19 test certificate before departing or arriving in Zanzibar (unless required by the airline).
Should you show any symptoms of Covid-19, then you may need to undergo enhanced health screening and may be tested for Covid-19.

Covid-19 Protective measures in Zanzibar
While in Zanzibar, visitors will be expected to adhere to full protective measures against the spread of Covid-19.

Covid-19 Tests prior to departure back to South Africa
South African travellers will be required to present a Covid-19 test certificate upon arrival back in South Africa. There are  3 options available to South African citizens to test for Corona Virus on the way home:

  1. Prior to departure to South Africa (return journey)
    A test can be arranged at your resort accommodation in Zanzibar 72 hours before departing back home. (US$ 100 pp)
  2. Upon arrival at OR Tambo Airport
    At OR Tambo Airport upon arrival in South Africa, you can undergo the Covid-19 test at Port Health. You will need to wait for the test to be completed before leaving the airport (2-6 hours waiting time)
  3. At a Pre-approved Quarantine Hotel upon arrival in South Africa
    A Covid-19 test can be performed at pre-approved quarantine hotel in Johannesburg (1-night booking required) by a private lab. You will need to wait for the test to be completed before leaving the airport (12-24 hours waiting time).
