The Best Time To Visit Mauritius

Sunbathing in Mauritius

Set in the heart of the Indian Ocean, Mauritius is a vibrant island with a tropical climate, making it a fantastic year-round destination. However, each month offers a slightly different experience, so timing your trip right can make all the difference.

JANUARY – MARCH: WET, CYCLONE SEASON

January is known to be one of the hottest months in Mauritius, but the island is still lively with festive-season travellers. You can also expect some very welcome thunderstorms and heavy rain.

February continues in a similar vein, with warm temperatures, high humidity, and short bursts of rain that usually clear quickly. This period also carries a higher risk of cyclones, but it can be a great option for those looking to avoid peak crowds.

By March, rainfall begins to ease slightly, while temperatures remain warm. This is also a culturally vibrant time to visit, with the colourful Holi Festival bringing energy and celebration across the island.

APRIL: HOT AND HUMID

April is typically hot and humid, with a noticeable holiday buzz as travellers visit over the Easter period. Expect warm, sunny days mixed with occasional showers; ideal if you enjoy a lively atmosphere paired with tropical weather.

MAY – DECEMBER: BEST TIME TO VISIT

May marks the start of the Mauritius Winter season, although “winter” here simply means milder, more comfortable temperatures and lower humidity. The temperatures are at a comfortable mid-range, and some of the humidity has lifted. Evenings can be slightly cooler, so packing a light layer is recommended.

June brings cooler weather and less humidity, along with the arrival of the island’s trade winds. This makes it an excellent time for activities like kitesurfing.

July is one of the cooler months in Mauritius, but still pleasant, especially for South African travellers looking to go away for the school holidays. The north of the island tends to be a popular choice during this time.

For milder temperatures and no-to-little rain, August is the perfect time to visit Mauritius (think of sunny days without the intense heat). However, we would suggest visiting the west or north coast for better shelter against the wind.

The official start of the peak season in Mauritius is the month of September. This is when the strong trade winds begin to die down, temperatures rise, and sunny days get longer.

October is often considered one of the best months to visit, with dry, sunny weather. With its large Indian population and Diwali (Festival of Lights) you will find the island coming alive.

November sees warmer temperatures return, along with increased humidity and occasional rain. It’s also a fantastic time for scuba diving and spotting seasonal marine life, including turtles.

The last month of the year is busy internationally, and Mauritius is no different. Humidity levels continue to rise over December, and heavy showers are a regular occurrence, but usually only later in the day. It is best to plan and book well in advance, as many travellers escape to Mauritius for the festive season.

No matter when you choose to visit, Mauritius has a way of delivering unforgettable moments, from golden sunsets and turquoise waters to vibrant festivals and rich cultural experiences.

Each season reveals a different side of the island, making every visit unique.
